One of the first steps to becoming a good writer is to read. Unfortunately, as we learn, we end up getting frustrated while reading because we can see things as writers that never used to bother us before when we were only readers. So, if you come across anything excellent that really fired your neurons and didn't want to make you hurl the book across the room (much), mention it up here! These can be your favorite books, or whatever you're reading. (This is slightly different from the 'What are you reading?' -- wait, does that even exist? no, but it does now -- thread, as we're only posting things we'd recommend to others. For books/articles about writing, please post those in the Resources board. Please post the title, author, a link to the work (where available, or the purchase page), and a short description of what it's about and why you recommend it. Snow, Glass, Apples by Neil Gaiman [Short Story, full text] - I always have terrible trouble coming up with something short and sweet, but if ever I try it again, this story will be a guide. What a sucker punch of an emotional reaction! The implications of the central point, and the characterizations (which I won't give away) are masterfully crafted. Read this if you like dark, creepy characters, happily never after, reinterpreted fairy tales, or in fact any of Neil Gaiman's stuff.
