I just found this fantastic masterpost on all kinds of aspects of building three-dimensional characters: So You Want To Make An OC? It covers basically everything- character development, diversity, interactions between characters, names and backgrounds, various aspects of making sure your reader won't hate the characters they're supposed to root for, etc. etc. ad infinitum. (Sidenote: I didn't see a character-themed thread already, so I just made one. If it belongs nested in another thread, feel free to delete and repost it there.)

www.columbia.edu/~em36/MrBennettAndMrsBrown.pdfSo I just read Virginia Woolf's essay "Mr. Bennett and Mrs. Brown" for school today, and although slightly confusing, it is a great, interesting, funny, quirky, deep and explanatory piece about characters in stories. Never ever let Mrs. Brown become neglected! The link is to a pdf version of the piece about 24 pages long.
