Metal gets a special place again this month, mainly so that the general music thread gets a chance to breathe! OP written by Siana Blackwood. The rules: 1. Post a Youtube, Spotify or other link so we can have a listen without too much trouble. 2. Add a brief description of what you're posting.
Currently listening to: Welcome To The Morbid Reich by VaderStraight up classic death metal. I haven't gotten tired of this album yet, after repeated listens. Some sick, sick riffage here!

Because of IKEA OR DEATH... Gudsforladt [album] by NorttStarts off with a thunderstorm, church bells and a string section. I guess it turns metal later on. Ye, it does. Makes Colosseum look light and cheerful, but definitely metal.

Oh yes, Nortt is very good! Evoken is pretty gloomy too, along the same lines. Atra Mors by EvokenSkepticism is VERY gloomy as well, though the guitar is more low-key as opposed to crushing. It still makes Katatonia's Dance of December Souls sound like Dora the Explorer.

Have we had this before? I was playing around on Spotify and hit the 'preview' for Graveworm... and it was this: I guess you can probably link to individual tracks on Spotify, but Youtube was easier. ---- Also, a serious thing: In Darkness by Agathodaimon. German black/extreme metal with randomness. Started out good, but by track three I'm getting the impression I've heard everything they can do.

Outbound by KeldianMelodic power/prog metal with a space theme. ...but it's another one of those bands that I go "Oh, that's not bad" and by track 3 I'm wandering off looking for other things. Darkness Between by SaraleeBlues/rock/doom metal. For some reason various internet sources call that 'Gothic metal', which gets really weird when the Nightwish/Epica style bands also get called Gothic metal.

The first song of the Keldian album would go very well with space unicorns. Or a workout mix. Or space unicorns doing a workout. While I watch, eating popcorn. I randomly came across this in Bandcamp after getting Metatheosis, and I just decided to check it out. I am glad I did. Sky Burial [Album] by Inter ArmaMost excellent spacey progressive ambient doomblack metal! (Yes, all of those genres.) Recommended if you like TesseracT, The Ocean, and/or Cynic. For a change of pace, some funeral doom by The Howling Void: The Primordial Gloom by The Howling VoidWhy is The Howling Void awesome? Melodic DOOM. Also? It's all ONE GUY. *applause* Because DUDE this is some awesome stuff. Comparable To: Colosseum (though slightly more melodic than crushing BUT still BLEAK and soul-crushing and I suppose personal taste strongly comes into play) Evoken Shape of Despair, etc. -- all the excellent funeral doomers! In addition, if you like Monolithe, you'll probably like this as well. (I have to put Monolithe separately, because while it's crushing funeral doom, it's a bit more experimental than the others...but it's still comparable to THV.) I think I should also mention the aforementioned SoD, which is more melodic and melancholy as opposed to crushing, but still bleak, and still excellent funeral doom nonetheless! Recommended if you like Evoken, Nortt, Esoteric, Colosseum, etc. It was on my doom list -- finally got to it this week, and loved it! Angels of Distress [Album] by Shape of Despair - YoutubeI'm almost thinking we need a proper metal spectrum where we can put things, with diagrams and everything because there is so much variation within each genre! (Don't worry, I'm not actually doing it. I'm not about to inflict my nitpickiness on everyone and cramp the energy of the Stevian Metal Appreciation Society of Headbangers! THAT'S RIGHT IT SPELLS SMASH.) Oooookay, I think I better curtail this post now, because sleepiness is increasing and grammatical logic is going down the crapper.
In which I wax verbose on the subject of gothic or not gothic? I'm listening to Saralee, and I can see why it's labeled gothic metal. It's like punk rock, except...gothicized? Gothic metal can really be an umbrella term for a wide variety of sounds. If a band isn't a traditional soprano-in-a-corset direct Theatre Of Tragedy scion, then it's usually just the 'gothic' label slapped on on top of an existing genre. It has more to do with the lyrical content and the way of modifying the base genre, rather than being limited to an overt style. (I'm one of those comical metalheads who likes to put things in little tiny genre boxes. Who called Nightwish and Epica gothic? I agree that they do tend to have the soprano in a corset, but their lyrics and melodies aren't weepy enough for it, and their riffs aren't mellow/minor enough. Plus, Epica's riffs are more death metal, and Nightwish is more power metal, if anything. That said, /shrug/ I can understand why someone might say that, too. I think. Maybe. Anyway, I think I'll focus on the important things, like when is the next season of Doctor Who coming out? July, is it still? MOFFAT!!! *shakes fist*) To those who read this far, congratulations. You are insane/awesome and you get a TARDIS.

I liked Inter Arma, can't remember anything about The Howling Void and although I already have Shape of Despair on my computer I don't remember listening to it in ages. --- This is a completely random thing, but what the heck do they do to mainstream/pop music? I was listening to some stuff recommended in a NaNo thread about female singers and it was like fingernails on chalkboards. It seems to be getting worse, too - stuff from the last year or so is exponentially harder to listen to than anything older. One of the things I love about metal is that (mostly) those electronic 'enhancements' are ignored... and the reason I just can't get into the symphonic metal bands is that female metal singers seem to be run through the 'pop' filters. Most of them can sing really well (e.g. Tarja's duet with Klaus Meine that's on youtube somewhere), but when it comes to studio albums there seems to be an idea that it's going to be more acceptable to the metal-listening public if it has that mainstream feel to it. Yay, found a use for the 'rant' smiley. This is just one of my things. Something that gets done to pop music in the mixing/production/whatever stage gives me a physical reaction similar to the previously mentioned fingers on chalkboards. --- Right now I'm listening to Sky Swallower by Vattnet Viskar. Atmospheric black/death/doom.

Okay, so apparently Nortt is all one guy too, therefore also impressive. XD
Ugh, /shudder/. It's not just you. Fingernails on chalkboard is a very apt analogy indeed. I'm listening to Sky Swallower. I like it so far. Some of the doomened bits of it remind me of The Ocean. (This post was written a while ago, but not posted, so correction, I was listening to Sky Swallower at that time.) Currently listening to Fluxion [Album] by The Ocean. Progressive doomdeath metal, one of their heavier ones. I pretty much love anything The Ocean does. About to listen to The Quantum Enigma [Album] by Epica. This is their newest album, and it is about to be my second listen. It's better than their last album, which is a travesty that I pretend doesn't exist.

The Quantum Enigma now has the distinction of being the first Epica album I like. I want to like some of the others, but something about them just doesn't sit right in my ears. It sort of seems like in TQE, Simone finally sounds like herself. --- I think we've had this before, but I'm listening to Awakening by Frosttide. Keyboard-heavy death/folk metal.

Apparently this song is sort of associated with my latest plot bunny. This is the version from Greatest Hit, because it's the one I have and I'm used to listening to it so the original version sounds sort of weird.
Anyway, Dream Theater. All kinds of awesome.

The Quantum Enigma now has the distinction of being the first Epica album I like. But yeah, the others were...uneven. I am currently listening to Graven by Nortt, which is extremely deep down dark doomy depressing doom metal. Second listen, and I still like it. I am also listening to Vermis [Album] by Ulcerate. Pretty good doomened death metal so far. Update halfway through: This is heavy. I like it. Almost all the way through: Yup. This is good. Even given the fact that I was doing a bunch of other things at the same time, it held my attention. I would qualify it more as deathened doom, though. It's slightly reminiscent of The Ocean in their heavier moments. I will be checking out their other albums, and this one might *gasp* even make it onto my car playlist!

This is... I don't know. Merlin seems to like it, but I think it's just his Sarah obsession talking. I didn't think I liked it that much, but I'm finding myself listening to a second song. Memories fall by Dark Sarah...but then I was distracted by discovering a thing with Vreth in it: 'Thirteen' by Chthonian(Note: links are to Youtube today.)

Meh, I'm not so keen on Dark Sarah -- too much like electropop Evanescence for me. I like the Chthonian song, though I'm not very big on Finntroll.
Currently listening to Vicky Psarakis's cover of The Agonist's song, Thank You Pain.
Funny thing is, since Alissa White-Gluz left The Agonist to join Arch Enemy, Vicky Psarakis is the new lead singer for The Agonist...but is it just me, or does Vicky Psarakis sound more like Angela Gossow than Alissa White-Gluz?
