Currently listening to Mirror Reaper by Bell Witch. Bandcamp link. Beautiful melodic, melancholy doom. It's less brutal and more...meditative, I guess, than their previous effort, Four Phantoms (which I also love) but it makes for a wonderful beautiful yet extremely depressing soundtrack. Definitely on the Starfall playlist.

The trouble with this thread is, there are periods where I listen to nothing new whatsoever, and just wallow in my old favorites, and if I linked those, it would be an endless loop of the same Dark Fortress . Then I go through a burst of Youtube trawling or randomly selecting a bookmarked artist from my library, so then at one time I usually have A WHOLE BUNCH OF STUFF to share and things tend to get lost in mega-posts, and I don't like doing mega-posts longer than 3 things anyway. We'll see if I can remember THIS TIME to share something each day. I also suck at keeping up with new releases in metal so most of my posts are stuff that's actually pretty old or well known, but still new to me. /shrug/ WHATEVER, I DO WHAT I WANT. Anyway. So I fell into the Youtube rabbit hole of metal today when I had intended to work, and it was all THIS GUY'S channel. Seriously the BEST metal covers I've heard. THOSE BREAKDOWNS. When Rage Against The Machine isn't heavy enough...Including this one because it's a hilarious parody of Coldplay's original music video for Yellow: All of these are necessary. His cover actually made me like Feel Good, Inc. by The Gorillaz, and I hate that song with a burning passion. This is how to not only genre-switch a song, but actually make something so real out of it that it's better than the original! Okay, I need to click off this tab NOW because now it's *7* hours in the Youtube rabbit hole, and I need to do story notes before I sleep.

Listening to: Following the Beast [Album] by Gormathon.
I'm in love.
Amazing melodic black metal with clean and growled male vocals.

Not bad. I'm gonna have to listen to more of their stuff before I form a full opinion.

I saved my favorite for last. Because holy CRAP. I would BUY THE HELL OUT OF EVERYTHING THEY'VE PUT OUT. I can't really say what style they have, not because they don't have one...they have ALLLLL of them! It's like melodic death metal, and a bunch of -core, and djent, and soul, and funk, and jazz, and doom, etc., and each song sounds way different because there are so many influences. SO MANY SUBGENRES! It's epic and amazing! And this is an understatement because the number of exclamation marks I require would push the envelope of sanity out so far that it would punch a hole in spacetime! Just...just listen. Wait for it... I could just keep watching this video and listening to this song over and over and over and not get sick of it, and that is exactly what I did. And just when I thought that Tatiana Shmailyuk had a SERIOUSLY IMPRESSIVE voice and range because she switches effortlessly between three different vocal styles, then these happened...
This video is really cool, but that's the least of it because the music is epic. I think I finally know what science fiction core sounds like. : : The number of different styles they can handle just amaze me. I love this variety!
I kind of sense a Tool influence here, whether direct or indirect I don't know. It is good. It is very good. IT IS MORE THAN GOOD WHAT AM I TALKING ABOUT Overall: 10 / 5 \m/ I really wish I had better words. English needs a word for something that surpasses excellence and mastery, that sounds less academic and snooty than "superlative," because I can truly say that just from these three videos, Jinjer is one of the best metal bands I've ever heard, and this is an understatement because again, words fail me. Not that the singer is the only talent. That drumming! That bass! That guitar! AAAAAAH! This is what happens when you get very passionate people together, all of whom have mastered their specialty. Best metal band in Ukraine, hell! They're one of the best metal bands PERIOD. They need to be much bigger than they are! This band could rapidly become one of my favorites. GO LISTEN! NOW!

Came across this randomly on youtube.
BLACK 'N' ROLL! \m/
Bit like Satyricon, except not.
Black metal vocals over rock and roll instrumentation.

My first new metal of the year is Der Weg einer Freiheit, a random Bavarian black metal band that Ne Obliviscaris retweeted:
It's one of those comforting background sort of things, which leads me to think extreme metal is probably my version of ambient sounds - that is, I listen to it whenever something with recognisable words would be intrusive. This particular one is in German as well as being black metal, too.

*runs shrieking into this thread*
AAAAAAAH
AAAAAAAAH
GUYS
I was pretty pissed off at Kamelot for putting out the overly processed crap that was Haven
but guys
GUYS
THIS SONG
THEY HAD ME AT THE PREMISE (A DYSTOPIAN FUTURE WHERE WE UPLOAD OUR CONSCIOUSNESSES INTO AIs) but the SOOOOOOOONG!!!
It actually sounds like older Kamelot and not like the pretty pop crap that was Haven!!!!
If this isn't going on the Deus Ex Machina playlist ain't nothing is.
Also.
IN THIS SONG a man (Tommy Karevik) does the clean vocals and a WOMAN DOES THE GROWLING (Lauren Hart from Once Human - see the song Eye of Chaos I linked up previously on this same page). I HAVE WANTED THIS TO EXIST FOR YEARS.
My life is now complete.
I AM THE EMPIRE
I AM THE EMPIRE
I AM THE EMPIRE

Kamelot album The Shadow Theory:
4/5 \m/
Good. Would listen again. Not foaming at the mouth though. Some good moments.
Expect me to randomly say I AM THE EMPIRE all over the place without context.
