So I was on Youtube and I discovered a Jorn Lande thing I'd never heard before.
For some reason I found track 2 absolutely hilarious.

Kamelot releases new single off their upcoming album, Haven -- Veil of Elysium!
Excellent as Ever, Kamelot. Can't wait for the new album to come out! \m/
Was this song written about my SSSS story on purpose? :-D
Haven comes out on May 5th.

Something that's been hanging over me for a while and I feel weird about: in spite of the obvious attractions, I didn't like The Malkuth Grimoire. Apparently 'it has Morean in it' isn't enough of a reason after all. This is one of those gloomy realisations on a level with reading a famous novel and hating it - it makes me question whether maybe I've lost interest in the entire genre. All the death/black/extreme stuff in my collection has spontaneously lost its appeal because I can't shake the thought that as soon as I press play I'll find myself hating stuff I've liked for years. So... yeah. TMG not only left me cold, but has kind of put me off stuff I think might sound similar. ----- And now some new music that was apparently released this week. Apparently black metal, but full of the bleak, dark, doomy moods I love. Soundtrack to the darkest corner of the Chasm of Despair. Shining - IX: Everyone, Everything, Everywhere, Ends (Terrorizer.com page, embedded Soundcloud.)

That's not weird. Not everyone likes everything even by one of their favorite artists. I loved TMG, but I know what you mean. Sometimes a favorite of othres just turns you off because it wiggles into your head and creates negative associations with others for some reason. Don't worry about ever suddenly disliking something you've liked. Maybe just take a break from death/black/extreme, listen to something else for a while, and get TMK out of your head. Or, go ahead, jump in, and listen to it right away. You'll then most likely find you can headbang away with no problem. :-D Finally got around to the Shining - IX album. I still haven't decided if I like it. :-P Currently listening to The Wreckage of Stars [Album] by Black Crown Initiate. Melodic progressive blackened death metal with acoustic interludes. This album actually has several different styles such that it's hard to pin a single label in it, but they're woven together very well. It's not the kind of crushing and emotional melodic death metal I usually go for, but I like it. I think it'd be one of those things I wouldn't mind playing in the background while I do something else, though. If you like Opeth you'll probably like this. Today I also listened to the newly released single Insomnia by Kamelot, from their forthcoming album, Haven. I really liked Veil of Elysium, but I'm not so sure I like this song. Might not be such a big deal though. Apparently this album is not so much a concept album centered around a single story as it is a set of songs all about one general central concept.[/a]

Music video. Will someone please take away 99% of their electronic toys and make them use their real musical skill? I mean, contrast that with ' welcome home'. (1% would be enough to still let them have microphones, amps, keyboards etc. right? I'm not talking about making them fully acoustic, just stripping out all the computer stuff.) ---- In other news, new Helloween songs: 'lost in America' and 'battle's won'.

I know, right? I think the two new songs are okay, but Veil of Elysium feels like it has too much mess thrown in, and Insomnia just feels WAY too digital. They both kind of left me lukewarm. I listen to my fair share of metal with digital stuff thrown in, but I'm not looking for that from Kamelot! I mean, they as artists have every right to branch out, but I'm not feeling any of the emotion and beauty that I know Kamelot is capable of evoking. I'm quite worried about how good the new album will be now. (On an entirely different note, after watching the video for Insomnia, I'm totally still getting the DEM vibes I got from Veil of Elysium. Is Haven going to end up being another of my cyberpunk soundtracks?) Welcome Home, on the other hand, turned me into a melted pile of hot goo upon first listen. Helloween: \m/ I listened to Nattramn [Album] by Ereb Altor today, which just came out today. They do blackened melodic Viking doom metal kind of like Bathory, which is a combination I love. I'd been looking forward to this, but this one kind of fell flat of their other releases. It's not that it's not good blackened death/doom, but their other albums are awesome and this one was just okay. Midsommarblot was the only really good song on the album. Final rating, worth listening to once if you like the style, but for regular headbangery I'm sticking with their previous releases.

Depending on what you read, this album/DVD is being release some time in April, on May 1st or on May 5th. Whichever it turns out to be, this is definitely something I'm looking forward to hearing.

It was May 1st.
I'm sort of confused about it. Some bits are fantastic, others sort of... odd. Could be just that I'll need a few repeats to settle in my mind exactly how to process it. Spectacular live recording, though.

Iv think the Satyricon recording is fantastic, despite the odd bits. Real reason I posted though... KAMELOT-KAMELOT-KAMELOT-KAMELOT-KAMELOT-KAMELOT-KAMELOT-KAMELOT-KAMELOT-KAMELOT!!! IT'S HEEEEERE! Haven [Album] by Kamelot is now up on Spotify. After one listen... It's undoubtedly the same band. However, what the what, Kamelot? Is that an industrial angle I hear? In the vein of Insomnia and Veil of Elysium, Kamelot have opted this release to go for more chugging and heaviness, and less of the melodic intricacy/epicness/emotional buildup that characterized Silverthorn. Perhaps it's not surprising, since this isn't a concept album, add they do tend to be less intricate when not doing a concept album, but I'm not sure how much I like it. It's a good album, certainly enjoyable, but knowing how talented they are as musicians I do wish they'd used the tools and artists at their disposal better, rather than the meh digital toys and the chug-chug-chug. Also, the song Haven. It's literally just a three minute musical piece at the very end. WHAT THE HELL. Isn't the album-named song supposed to represent the heart of the album? Might have just been me, but I was expecting something more epic, as they usually do, so at the end, it was like, that's it? I will never understand why they did that. That said, Tommy Karevik's voice is always a pleasure to listen to, and he's xD it's as beautiful as ever here. (THAT said, Tommy could sing the alphabet song and I would still buy it.) The man can sing anything he wants to, and he carries off the heavier style well. Having said all this though, I've only listened once, and am on my second listen. My opinion could very well change. Maybe I just need time to process the different sound. Even so, this doesn't worry me as much as it might with another band. Kamelot has its ups and downs for me, and while Epica, The Black Halo, and Silverthorn are by far my favorites, Ghost Opera and Poetry for the Poisoned weren't. Not to say they were bad, they WERE good, but I don't find myself going back to them as much, except for one song. In short, Haven is definitely worth listening to at least ononce. I'd say, listen and judge for yourself. EDIT: Sometimes it takes me a bit of time to process a new album. Having done that, I have to say I don't just like this album. I'm starting to love it. Er. At least the first half. It's a mixed bag from OMGLOVEIT to 'meh.' Therefore, just as good as the non-Epica/Black Halo/Silverthorn albums. This is undoubtedly a heavier Kamelot album, and it's certainly no Silverthorn, but taking it for what it is, I think the first half is fantastic and beautiful. I think the reviewers on Amazon do a far better job of describing why Haven is awesome, so I'll leave it to them. However, I'm starting to get it. It's not epic like Silverthorn, but neither is it mere chuggery. Tommy's voice is an emotion-packed power punch, and the melodies and composition are TIGHT! I won't say that there's no progression either. While Silverthorn was a lyrical and literary plot, this is is a journey through an idea, through emotion. (That said, various songs off of Haven have started feeding several of my plot bunnies, so there's a good chance I'm biased. XD) As for the second half though, there's more straight-up chuggery and aggression, so I found that harder to get into. Not that the songs aren't good, but I could listen to Rammstein or The Agonist if I was in the mood for that. It isn't what I come to Kamelot for. Like Revolution? Given the cyberpunk-modern-societal-commentary bent of the album, maybe it works, but...straight up industrial chuggery? I don't know why they'd do that. I think the only reason I still like this song is because Tommy's vocals keep it from being hogwash. (No offense to those of you who do like straight up industrial. I also fully agree that the artists have every right to go with any style they want. I just mean that this album is definitely good and I like it, but it is a mixed bag for me.) Anyway, if you're looking for an epic climax, you really can't stand an 'industrial' sound at all, or you didn't [eventually] get to like Veil of Elysium and Insomnia, then this album probably isn't for you. (Though seriously, check out Under Grey Skies. That song makes me wish I could sing.)

Just Roy Khan singing a Kamelot song at a wedding. Nothing much, right?
DEAD.
All brain activity has been suspended pending this sudden onslaught of high-pitched squealing and fangasming, while Agent attempts to unmelt herself off the floor.
I've edited my original review of Haven in the previous post.

Random new thing found via Metalunderground.com: Hunters, an album by a band called Olathia. Sort of similar to The Agonist, but a bit more of a rock sound. Reminds me of Killing Heidi, which probably doesn't help. Good background music for when my characters want a female vocalist, but the individual songs are not particularly memorable. (Link is to Bandcamp. It's on Spotify as well, but for some reason the BC stream sounds a lot better.) ----- Edit after watching the Roy Khan video: Absolutely beautiful. Roy and that guy on the guitar should release an album of traditional Scandinavian ballads or something.

Nice. Good stuff. Absolutely beautiful. Roy and that guy on the guitar should release an album of traditional Scandinavian ballads or something. GODS OF METAL, SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY. CAN THIS HAPPEN? So Amazon recommended Ghost Ship Octavius [Album] by Ghost Ship Octavius. I nearly turned this off halfway through the first song. Glad I didn't! Great progressive power metal album. I've played it at least five or six times now, and it hasn't left my car playlist yet. I just want to say, though, MILLS OF THE GODS. Sweet PROG to the POWER. Groovy and melodic! This is their first release. I can't wait to see what these guys unleash in future! -- In the epic metal void left behind the aftermath of my love/hate relationship with Kamelot's latest release, I finally got around to listening to more Conception. BLOODY FANTASTIC. Why did I wait this long? I can't even recall why I was turned off before. Maybe I just heard a song I didn't like so much the first time round or something. Currently listening to: It pisses me off to no end that literally the only way to buy Conception music in America is as super expensive imports.

Randomly found this: Sombre Light 2014 - 10th Anniversary E.P. by The Eternal. It's a pay-what-you-want download on Bandcamp. The original 'The Sombre Light Of Isolation' was the first metal album I ever bought and it's still one of my favourites. These re-recorded tracks are different, but still pretty good.
