BECAUSE WE NEED ONE. Otherwise the musical thread gets too cluttered.
You can talk about anything metal here.

I am reading that list of musicians and my jaw is dropping in slow motion like a hot spoon through rock hard frozen ice cream. My brain is shorting out. Somewhere in this room there is a thin drawn out high-pitched noise like a dying raven. Who's squealing? Oh, it's me. The only one of those groups I've never listened to is Aborted, but the rest are amazing! Having heard what Obscura and Morean sound like together even without Morean on vocals (link below), this makes me very happy. Coherent language is beyond me right now. Velocity [Song] by Obscura -- Morean's solo at ~3:30 -- \m/ \m/ \m/ \m/ \m/ \m/ \m/ \m/*twitch* Actually, you've said in the past that Morean doesn't sleep, so he was already in that category. :-D I sense a pattern.

I posted a silly review of Venereal Dawn on my new(ish) blog. I'm not really sure why, beyond that I sort of accidentally wrote a draft of the first half of the post while thinking about what a review in 'metal fangirl' voice would sound like. It's one of those things I'm probably going to be too scared to ever look at again, but I posted it anyway. Siana BlackwoodReplying here because I don't want to clog up your PPT. :-P As long as the metal fangirl voice is your own, it'll be fine. *click* Yep. Basically. Epic poetry, headbang-worthy, colossal. :-D It's been on repeat for me ever since it came out. I sense new textures every time I listen to it, and I haven't even looked up the lyrics yet. Looking forward to that. I actually wrote a review of Venereal Dawn on Amazon a few days ago. It's woefully flat. I'm not good at writing reviews...but I HAD to, because someone on the internet was WRONG. I checked Amazon when it came out to see the reviews and the album got THREE STARS because the first reviewer was hoping for another Eidolon. Luckily another review of 5 stars bumped it up to 4 stars and mine made it 4.3...but I still think the album should be 5 stars. Eh well, I can't help general opinion. Why don't more people listen to Dark Fortress? Come on, people! (I probably should have mentioned some of the above positive qualities in my review. I really don't know how competent reviewers manage to assimilate an album in the space of a day in enough detail to post a comprehensive review almost as soon as an album comes out! For me the first listen is pure gut reaction. Sometimes it's just a general sound which I can tell is awesome, but It takes me weeks of listening on repeat with little gaps in between and THEN looking up the lyrics and doing it all over again for me to tell WHY I like it and to get to the point of being able to do a comprehensive review! Hmm...) Of all the reviews I've read though, this one posted today sums it up the best, I think.

I'm surprised by the lack of "Dark Fortress was better with Azathoth!" comments. People still go on about the original Arch Enemy singer and argue over which version of Helloween was the best. Then again, the Kamelot fans seem to be pretty good about adoring both Roy and Tommy. Metal fans - such complicated little creatures.
Random fact: All the guitars on 'the deep' were done by Morean.

There is no obviously discernible logic to it. I think it really boils down to differing conceptions about what the soul and sound of a band is. If a lineup change results in a fan feeling it's 'not the same band anymore' while another doesn't mind, then...metal forum wars result. I think for Kamelot Tommy was one of the rare vocalists who could adequately keep the style of the previous vocalist going (because the man has some IMPRESSIVE range/skill/versatility holy crap) while still bringing his own stamp to the band. Often either one falls flat because it's just 'more of the same, nothing new' or 'it's all changed and it sucks.' Hah, now we'll see a triple-fronted assault about Arch Enemy vocalists -- the 'Johan Liiva was the best vocalist!' camp, the 'I wish Angela Gossow had never left!' camp, and the 'Alissa is AMAZING and the new album is BRUTAL!' camp. (I'd have to make an entire separate post for my views on that. Heh. Never once did I think that perhaps it wasn't necessary to share this with the entire internet, but only how! XD I really MUST be a metalhead.) In the same way, I rather suspect that had there been more reviews on Venereal Dawn, it would have boiled down to 'This is AWESOME!' and 'I wish they'd done Eidolon II!' Camps. :-P Yeah, you can tell. All Morean compositions have a very distinct sound. :-D Incidentally, this is a picture Alkaloid posted on Facebook of the track file for one of their songs, which I believe Morean was working on. THREE guitars...and SO MANY LAYERS! It just astounds me how anyone can possibly keep track of all that AND create glorious art, but I guess that's why we instantly devour anything he does! Also another one of Morean recording. The entire album. (In one of the pictures, you can see Metatheosis on the floor.) I'm so excited about this. Not just Morean but all those artists are AWESOME. I hope they release a sample soon!

I'm surprised by the lack of "Dark Fortress was better with Azathoth!" comments. Aaaaaaaaaand...there we go. Sort of. (Huh. It seems this reviewer lives solely to write thousands of reviews in which he informs the public that all and sundry are posers. Sigh.) What is it about metal that makes people supend all rational belief in hopes that a band will suddenly throw off ten years of evolution in lineup and musicianship and just revert to their primordial sound? No other genre does this!

I'm watching this in the middle of the night with the lights off. Did that tree just blink at me? Heh. So that's where the entwives went. They sound like a slowed down Týr with added death metal growls. Good stuff.

I did indeed wonder why they chose those clothes, but since he did say that it was all intentional, I'm happy to wait until the album comes out to see how it all comes together. I'm glad the rest of it will be a little more complex than Inner Enemy, though. I really like that song, but one radio-friendly number on an album is enough for me! :-)

Ne Obliviscaris is awesome. Progressive, I'd say, but not exactly doom. More like progressive death metal with a doomy sound? Ne Obliviscaris is releasing a new album? Sweet! Off to check out the tracks...

ERRRRRRRRGGGGHHH. I need to vent.
So I'm working the graveyard shift at work, and I had my headphones around my neck because no one else who is here would be disturbed.
*Heavy metal hydra flops sbout and i rub its tummy*
Coworker: "That's some pretty heavy stuff you're listening to. I wouldn't have pegged you as a metal person." Me: "Yeah, that's about all I listen to." Coworker: "Uh, that's some pretty dark stuff." Me: "Not really. Metal is dramatic, but I find a lot of rap is much darker." Him: Said something implying something to the effect that only shut-in creepy loser lunatic serial killers listen ONLY to metal...because he "knew this one guy" who was a weirdo who "didn't get enough sunlight." Implying that I was disturbed as well.
*heavy metal hydra droops and whines like it's been kicked*
Uh, yeah, great. So because you know one guy who's a creepy loser, it means all metalheads are, no matter that all the time I've been working here I've never come across as anything but a stable adult. Whatever issues "that one guy" has, it ain't the music causing them.
*Metal hydra looks up with great big eyes and drops a flaming black trident on the ground, which I then throw for fetch. He runs off.*
I feel like I should write something empowering and uplifting here, but I'm just mad. I've never dealt well with feeling judged. I'm only good at hiding it. The internet is the only place where I'm not surrounded by judgemental hypocrites. (Yes, you read that right.)
Tell people you listen to rap, and they smile and nod and think nothing of it. Tell people you listen to metal and they think you hang fetal skeletons from your coat rack. (Honestly, rap makes me a lot angrier and a lot more depressed than metal. I feel like it's so much darker in some ways! Nothing wrong with that. But if people can accept that, why this stigma about metal?)
*hugs heavy metal hydra.* Why would anyone want to kick this adorable fellow?
*Summons a demon to bring her coffee because WTF our work gave us breakfast but NO COFFEE it's frickin' 6:30 am and most of us haven't slept all night HA HA BOO HOO :-| *

All metal is either screamo with no musical merit or pure Satanism. Everyone knows that. /sarcasm

Morean talking about magic, physics and science fiction, aka the lyrical content of 'The Malkuth Grimoire'. (Which is 108% funded, so they're going to have to make it ) Brain overload. That could be the first time I've been confused over whether to respond to a metal-related thing as a fangirl or as a writer.

Is there a difference? :-D
Brain. Dead.
Because in less than 5 minutes Morean just described why I write, why I write the SFF I do, and even why I write my plot hydra.
I begin to believe that Morean knows everything.
