Suggested by prodigyfishy, who said she stole it from feedme. Dad compared me to Harper Lee last night, so the topic sort of jumped out at me. I occasionally try to talk to my parents about writing. They're both big readers and keen to have a book with my name on the cover so they can show it off. Dad is the kind of person who'd carry the book everywhere he went just to increase the chances of people seeing it and being interested. Even though I'm in my thirties, though, they still think of me as their 'little girl'. The idea of breaking it to them what their sweet little innocent writes is honestly terrifying. I think parents mostly have this idea that 'write what you know' is what we all do, so if they read Junior's book it's going to be about a happy and satisfying home life and a boring character who's basically an authorial self-insert. No, that's not the really scary bit. The really scary bit is "What if they think my blind half-insane psychic former assassin is an authorial self-insert?" My family at least (don't know about the rest of you) are determined to see me in my characters and so when I summon the dark penguin army, in the back of my mind is the idea that people I know and love are going to think this is how I feel. So, talking about writing with your friends and family. Something you do or a subject to avoid? Any awkward or humorous moments you'd like to share?

It's the same case for me. They know I write SFF, but I'm terrified of what they will say and think even if they tell me they won't say anything, that they just want to read it. My parents don't read, and even then what I write is way outside their taste. What if they judge me, or they tell me I'm wasting my time, or they think I have a sick and twisted mind and they try to get me to change because they think I should be writing "serious" stories about the life of a 21st century female in her late 20s?

My parents know I write, and while my dad thinks of it as a side-hobby, my mom is really gung-ho on it. We talk about writing a lot, toss ideas back and forth, and she's trying to write a book as well The thing is... while she knows the basis of my plots, she doesn't know anything about the romance portions (like I've said a few times before, I don't do het), and being who she is, I don't see any forgiveness on the horizon x.x while she knows that the characters aren't always reflections on the author, she'll still make a big fuss out of it -sigh- My friends however... they roll their eyes when I bring up my writing xD if I'm lucky, they'll 'enthusiastically' cheer me on lol

Haha yeah, my siblings just roll their eyes. XD I know what you mean about the het romance. A lot of mine are het, but there are some scenes and storylines that are not. My parents don't even like SFF as a genre (dad thinks it's a waste of time, mom thinks it's sick and twisted), let alone non male x female pairings, so not sure if there will be understanding there. High chance they will take one look at my murderous world hopping Voldie babies, melancholy necromancers, Vader god emperors, and sorceresses, and wonder what happened to their quiet, boring daughter to turn her into a homicidal maniac. : : Haha, I think they'd have heart attacks if I played them my story playlists. XD

With that said, my parents don't write, but I get my weirdness from them. And after two years of hearing my blather on about Nano, as well as a little writer friend she's made, my little sister has started down the path of writing fanfic... (One Direction *grimace* fanfic, but still... I taught her well.)
