I'm doing some research because I had the idea of posting a story on Steve in serial format and as I can't predict how much I'm going to like it, I don't want to mess with 'first electronic rights' and lose the possibility of having it trade published. So, here's what I'm learning: Posting in a password-protected forum with limited membership is generally not considered publishing. This includes critique sites, but generally requires some kind of admin approval for members rather than just being free access to anyone who signs up. To meet this requirement on Steve, we might have to set an additional password or some kind of posting/rank requirement for members to read things in Show Your Work or challenges like SSSS. So long as the material isn't publicly available (that is, it can't be located with a search engine) and there's some kind of vetting process for exactly who gets to read it, we should be okay. If we were to go down this road, any requirements we set for board access would basically be 'set and forget' - nothing that would be an ongoing annoyance to active members. The easiest way to do it is just by restricting rank, since that carries with it the implication that we've had plenty of time to decide if new members are nice people or not. Yeah, okay.
I figured Steve itself is password protected, but since we need a vetting process as well, rank is good. We have ranks at 10 posts and 25 posts, but the former seems too few and the latter too many, considering the pace of the forum, but that's open. How about adding/changing one at 15 or 20 for viewing these? Or 10/15 for view, 20/25 to post?
For SSSS and further such challenges, anyone will be welcome to sign up, but they'll need to participate in the forum before being able to post.

I have no idea what other effect this might have, but it's possible to set the board view/post options to 'everyone above a certain rank' and 'everyone in [groupname]'. If we want to give special permission to people (e.g. someone who's been invited to the forum specifically to read someone's work), we can have a group they're added to as soon as they join. My suggestion: how about read and reply to threads at 10, start new threads at 25, and an additional special group that gives read/reply privileges to anyone who's been vouched for by an existing member? Of course, this assumes some crazy person around here is actually going to volunteer for this whole 'posting a story in serial form on Steve' thing... It should be me, because it's my crazy idea. *panics quietly*----- So, thoughts from the community? About the general concept of setting up a safe space for writing and posting complete works of original fiction, I mean. There should be some kind of '@ everyone' tag so I can poke people and make them notice threads.

The easy way to mass troll tag is to go to the members page, copy the tables into a text editor, mass replace the tabs between with commas, then mass replace ^.*?,(.*?),.*$ with @\1 or @$1 depending on the text editor. Which produces thissss! (Seriously everyone, we'd like your input.) Yeah, that could work. Tiered permissions by default, but any people who join specifically to read something would have to be added manually. We wouldn't automatically want ALL new members added to the group by default, as that would just defeat the purpose. So, 10 - read/reply, 25 - post, special read/reply group (manual) pending member voucher sounds good. I have tentative plans to post a serial story as well. I might combine it with SSSS, or I might just do my SSSS externally. Still debating. I'm toying with the idea of shelving Into the Dead Red Light for now and using my Storyland metastory. It's already becoming a saga, and at least I know where I'd start...

Hello!
Attempting to input here but not 100% I get it - you guys want to add in an extra layer of protection so we can post entire stories and not get hit by future copyright issues yeah? If I have got the gist of it, I'm all for it. I doubt I will ever publish anything (at the moment, that's not a goal of mine) but I think it's important for others and who knows what I want to do in the future.

I think that'd be a good idea; almost makes it feel like an exclusive club xP
I also might post something if this comes into fruition, but we'll see.

SK Yes, you got it. That is exactly what we would like to do. Danielle Wayland Yes indeed! Everyone who qualifies gets free monocles. It sounds like this is, by and large, a good idea. It would also help in terms of these SSSS challenges...right now we are limited to the off months, but with a private board, we could do a full 12-month serial challenge, or those who wanted to post their Camp or NaNo stories in their alpha state for motivation but didn't want it "published" yet could do so.

Okay, I'm up for this, as far as I understand it. Hope you think I'm a nice person and have participated enough, even though I do occasionally disappear.

Anyone have any challenges they'd like to see?

Challenge ideas: * Open-ended serial or first draft * Some kind of regular prompt-based flash fiction thing (or short stories, vignettes or whatever) * Post NaNo/Camp NaNo projects as we write * SSSS-like challenges * A monthly (or whatever) critique meeting A thing for everyone to think about: the idea of setting challenges is to give you an extra incentive to do a thing you want to do anyway. Think about what you want to do, then think about challenges that would help you get those things done. (Hint: If you're not sure what things you want to do, 'The Scariest Challenge Ever' might help.) By the way, at the moment I'm tentatively looking at starting my serial/first draft/whatever on July 1st.

Challenges:
-A serial nibble challenge variant for those who are daunted by the thought o. polishing a huge block of text every post.
Basically, you'll post 50/100/250 more words to your story every day (or 400/500 every other day) instead of having to create a whole new chapter every interval. Recommended that the limit is still only one thread to a chapter, so keep using the same thread for updates to make it easier to read. Start a new thread only once that chunk is done, not every post. Since these are so short, anyone who wants to comment can use a designated separate thread and just quote the relevant post.

Serial nibble challenge could be a good thing for June.

Yeah, Nibble challenge in June sounds good. I like those above suggestions as well. What kind of setup did you have in mind for the monthly critique meeting? Would that be at a set time where each person brings in a short story and we all post on the same thread, or would that be a live chat?
