Hello
I am not sure if this could be turned into a challenge in terms of thinking of what you want to do for nanowrimo, but I have been thinking about it. I have had an idea for a while to write a thriller about the cure for cancer being found but they won't release it because it would be a huge financial loss for the pharma industry and a lot of people would be out of work. I am not sure where to start with this or what, if any, research I would have to do. Thanks. Sarah

Let's see... We had the 'I have a plan! Attack' challenge for NaNo prep around this time last year. Is that anything like what you're thinking? The overall idea of IHAPA was to come up with an idea in August, develop plans etc. during September and October, then write the draft in November and December. The problem is, for various reasons none of the people who signed up for it made it through the planning stage and the whole thing was basically an exercise in group writer's block. It's actually part of the motivation behind the current self-evaluation challenges - the plan is to figure out what sort of challenges and goals would actually work for each of us and then come up with a way to use that information to set challenges and goals on Steve. Okay, so general advice on NaNo prep. First of all, decide if you want to do advance planning or not. I'm assuming you do, because I don't really see a pantser worrying about NaNo this far in advance. Next, take a look at some of the threads in the Resources board here on Steve, check out the NaNo Prep section of the NaNoWriMo forum and maybe do a Google search for 'nano prep'. Out of all this, choose a prep method that suits you. As a Steve challenge, it would probably look something like this: 1. Have/get an idea. 2. Choose a planning method you'd like to follow. 3. Plan the novel. 4. NaNoWriMo. Stage 2 could be a group activity if there were several people interested - for example, everyone might have the task of finding three different prep methods to present to the group, then discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each one before making a final decision. This is all just guessing, though. What sort of help are you looking for?

I would learn about the pharmaceutical industry as it is. Look for similar things that happen in the real world, so you have concrete detail to incorporate.
Build the world your characters live in. Even if it's the real world, you still need to do your research. Talk to people in the field if you know or can find any. What are issues they deal with daily?
