hello
Are there guidelines around basing your novel on a true story? Are you allowed to do this if you change enough names and details? Thanks

You are indeed allowed to write true stories. Be very careful though. Whether you're writing fiction or nonfiction, be sure to do to your research thoroughly so you get all facts and POVs right. Also make sure you get permission from those involved. You also need to mention in the text that it is a true story, or based on one. Be sure to credit all sources appropriately. Of course, while we would be more than happy to offer advice and support, we are not experts, so definitely do more research on the ins, outs, and pitfalls of writing true stories. Google is a good place to start, but I also highly recommend talking to other writers who have written true stories and checking out AbsoluteWrite. No matter what level you are, it'a a great resource for writers to share information about how the industry works and just to hang out.
