Mind Mapping Tools
If you have any mind mapping tools you'd like to recommend, please post here. Please be sure to include the name of the tool, a link to where it's available, the platforms it works on, how much it costs, and any important notes about the features. Alternatively, you can PM one of the admins or mods with the information, and we will add it for you.
We will be updating this post as and when new entries get added, so it's all in one place.
- FreeMind - A free open source Java mind mapping tool. Runs on any OS that can run Java (Mac, Windows, etc.) I think this allows circular links without limiting you to trees, but I'm not 100% sure about that. Originally linked by Amy P. Reed from NaNoPlotMo.
- MindNode - Only available for Macs, on the Mac app store. The basic version is free, the Pro version costs $20. Limits you to trees, so it's better if you want to use it for something where the structure is sort of known, rather than chaotic planning. Originally linked by Jᴀy V. Aꜱᴛᴇʀ 💀🐍 on NaNoPlotMo.
- XMind - Tool works in both Mac and Windows. I haven't used this personally, so I'm not sure about how well it works. Basic version is free, Pro is $49.99/year (at the time of post). Originally linked by Amy P. Reed on NaNoPlotMo.
- FreePlane - Free, open source Java tool. Can only have one central node per map, but allows easy switching between open maps. Any Java-compatible OS. Originally linked by Amy P. Reed on NaNoPlotMo.
- The Guide - Free, open source tool for plotting and moving things around, structured like Scrivener. Windows only, I think. Originally linked by Amy P. Reed on NaNoPlotMo.
- Popplet - Web-based tool also available on iPad. Extremely easy to use. Supports highly customizable nodes with multiple data types (images, on-the-spot drawings, text, etc.), and any structure for the maps. Web-based has three tiers with a monthly cost. The basic tier allows you to create 5 boards. The iPad app is $4.99.
