Writing Software
If you have additional software you'd like to see included, please leave a post below with name, link to software, short description, operating systems supported, and cost, and we will add it to this post.
- Hiveword - A web-based novel organizer to manage characters, settings, plot lines, etc. Supports any planning methodology, allows you to tag items, and provides you with name/place suggestions. Hiveword is free. Originally linked by @tokengrady on NaNoPlotMo.
- Yarny - Web-based writing tool with a simple interface that allows you to focus on the words. Allows multiple stories, and allows splitting text into scenes that can be moved around (pretty sure). Stories are stored in the cloud, and are automatically saved. Works on iPad, though it's a bit slow, but not on iPhone. I haven't tried Android. Yarny is free.
- FocusWriter - A simple writing tool with an interface that gets out of the way when you're not using it, but which you can pull out by moving your mouse to the edge of the screen. This is a desktop application. Supports plain text or simple rich text, and is fully themable. I use this one, and personally, I love it. Available for Windows, Linux, and OS X. FocusWriter is free and open source.
- Scrivener - Oh, where to start with Scrivener. In a nutshell, it's organizational software as well as writing software. Structure your document however you want, easily split, merge, and drag around snippets or scenes, view the whole as index cards, add tags, annotations, blurbs, etc. Supports pretty much any form of document besides fiction - literary, technical, etc. Use it to draft one long, simple document, or dive into the nitty gritty as much as you like. There are a ton more features - click on the link for more details. Scrivener is available for OS X and Windows, and it costs $45. However, NaNoWriMo winners get a 50% discount.
