Fangirl: *melts, dies, goes looking for wallpaper* * finds it* *is hopelessly conflicted over HelloThor vs. Morean* Writer: *fascinated by the way Morean fits metal + science + magic together* *wonders if she can hold the fangirl off long enough to make notes* *remembers that Merlin looks exactly like Morean only possibly without the beard* *is crushed by the fangirl* ...yes, I have HelloThor as my desktop background right now. It's been one of those days.Oh, and this is first post on a new page...

I think I need a necromancer, because my inner science fiction nerd whose existence birthed Agent melted and died at the end of the video. YOU THERE, BLACK SORCERER. FIX ME WITH THE POWER OF METAL. *BS snaps his fingers, and resurrects Agent* *whose inner metalhead melts and dies remembering how awesome the song that softly overlaid Morean's commentary was* *BS rolls his eyes but can't blame Agent because it WAS awesome, and resurrects Agent again* *who promptly flips to new page and melts and dies yet again* What are the chances of getting through this album unscathed?

Found myself watching this video and thinking "Wow, for a bass solo that's some really good keyboard," and something about Andreas and hair-straighteners. Then Microphone Guy popped up for the last few seconds... Watching it again once it loaded properly, I realised he's also visible at the start. I probably shouldn't make my poor old computer play videos. Anyway, Microphone Guy is Tommy, with this hair:

Warning: I'm going to have to apologise to all the Kamelot fans on this forum for this, but listening to Haven, I made it about a minute into track 6 and then gave up. Honestly, if I didn't know what they'd done in the past and/or with other bands, I'd have said this was just another crap Nightwish wannabe band. This is pop metal. It's Evanescence with a male singer. I can't even pretend it might be better live. I've heard what they did to 'center of the universe'. Basically, if it sounds like it was barfed up by a computer, it's a fair bet I'm not going to like it. I like albums to sound like they're a recording of the actual musicians - like if I was standing in the studio, that's what they'd sound like. I kind of feel like it's time to stop calling myself a metal fan. Either that or change my avatar to the grumpy Norwegian black metal shop owner from Metalocalypse. So, I'm disappointed. The two albums I've most looked forward to this year have ended up making me feel like I should quit trying to listen to metal. It's not even just those albums, either. There's this sound that once heard, can't be un-heard and it taints other albums by the same musicians or the same producer. It's like you realise where they're heading and the earlier parts of the journey lose their appeal as well, because the context is different and now all the things that point towards the current end of the line are the most noticeable elements.

Oh. So it's not just me. Maybe I'm not insane.
What you said. That's what's bothering me. It's way too processed and poppy. I was looking forward to this release of supposedly epic metal art. Maybe that's why this is so weird for me...if only it was bad, I could dislike it freely like I did Epica's RFTI. At least they were the same band, but they just happened to have a bad release. However, while Haven is not entirely bad, it seems like it's not metal anymore.
All those Amazon reviewers couldn't be right in loving it, could they, and yet I spent the whole time wondering what was missing, and why I didn't immediately get into what seemed to be a clearly good piece of music by one of my favorite bands? I actually had to go back and listen to older albums yesterday to assure myself that I was still a functioning metalhead. There is no lack of skill, but comparisons confirmed it. The old favorites are as good as ever, and I still like what I like...but sound now has certainly changed to friendly poppy crowd pleasers. That One Sound they used to have is gone.
I do like Haven, but only for what it is (good pop metal, great singer), and at that I suspect probably only because it woke my bunnies at the moment. There is only one (yes, admittedly poppy) song I really like, but I think the rest will just fade from memory over time. I might have said this in the other thread, but I can get this sound through any number of other bands at any time. I don't come to Kamelot for it, and that's what disappoints me. I think I even actually said that some songs sounded like an Evanescence x Rammstein pop sound, but them I deleted it because I thought it made me sound like an a-hole.
Does saying this make me sound like a complete a-hole?
I don't think this has ruined Kamelot for me or anything though. I'll just stick to their older stuff and be wary of any new releases.
Also, isn't complaining about how metal bands are no longer true metal the quintessential sign of the true metalhead?

So apparently Poisonblack broke up in August. (Source: www.poisonblack.com/site/ ) If anyone needs me, I'll be over here in the corner being a sad (and bad, because very late to the wake) fangirl.
