FAQs
Whoa. What is this place? Why am I here?
Steve is an awesome site that combines a wrimo (almost?) every month with a year-round writing/planning/doomandgloom group. If you're here, you've been pointed at this forum either to take part in a NaNoWriMo-style event or to settle into the year-round group. Or possibly you met a Steve member on another forum and you were invited here to check out your friend's progress. Or you might be here by accident, in which case why not hang around a little longer and see if you like us?
Wait! I only see two boards! Am I in the right place?
You are indeed! Only two of the boards are publicly viewable. You will need to create an account and sign in in order to view the rest of the content. The reason for this is that people often talk about their plot ideas and post snippets of writing up for review and discussion, as well as the occasional brainstorm and/or spoiler. Since this is personal material, we don't want to make it public.
Do I have to do all the challenges?
YES YOU MUST DO ALL THE CHALLENGES!!! Just kidding. All challenges are optional - anything from 'participate in all challenges' to 'lurk in the year-round section and slowly work on one or two projects' is fine.
How is this different from FebNoWriMo/MarchNoWriMo/NaMayWriMo/SeptNoWriMo?
Well... it's easier for Siana Blackwood and Jį“y V. Aź±į“į“Ź šš (admins of those forums) to maintain. Also, it has a year-round hangout section so even if you're not doing a wrimo it's easy to keep track of friends.
If I do Camp/NaNo/JanNo/any other external challenge not covered by Steve, can I apply those words here?
Yes, you can count words from Camp NaNo, NaNoWriMo and whatever other wrimo-style events you might be participating in. During the Camp/NaNo months, Steve turns into a friendly hangout for both NaNo writers and
SUMMONS CATHULHU, OLD GOD OF ORLY'EH, TO DEVOUR THE FLESH OF YOUR UNBORN PLOT BUNNIES
layabout SLACKERS! Just kidding, it turns into an awesome hangout where those who are doing other challenges and those who aren't can still hang out and keep in touch with friends.
What words count towards my goal?
For a typical word count goal, any words of actual story written can count, but it's really up to you, based on how you work. Plotting words can count too. Any words that get you closer to completion count. Nonfiction counts as well. So yes, if your goal for the month is to complete that lurking English paper, you can certainly use your essay words! Sorry, you can't count your math homework.
What will happen to FebNoWriMo/MarchNoWriMo/NaMayWriMo/SeptNoWriMo?
The sites will be archived and locked to keep them safe from spammers, but if you're already a member of the site you'll still be able to log in and read everything. Nothing will be deleted, but we won't be active on those forums.
What is a PPT? What can I put in it?
A PPT is a personal progress thread, where you can list your goals (wrimo/non-wrimo) for the month/year and tell us about your progress. It's like your personal writing journal where you can doom and gloom all you like and talk to others who are dooming and glooming as well! :-D See this thread for more details: PPT Rules
Where do I go to sign up for challenges?
That would be Ye Olde Bucket O' Challenges. This is where all of the sign ups for the special wrimos (FebNo, MarchNoWriMo, NaMayWriMo, etc.) will live, as well as any other Steve challenges that are going on.
I wish a challenge existed for what I want to get done. None of the current ones fit what I need.
Any Steve member is welcome to create a challenge or to present ideas for one. If you have an idea in mind, you have several options:
-If you know what you want, go ahead and create it!
-If you're not sure whether others would want to join in, or you're not sure how it would work, you could always create a thread or poll in the discussion board to see what others think. If enough people are interested, we'll do it!
-If you'd like Steve to add an official month-long event that doesn't already exist, you could always PM one of the admins. If it's feasible and enough people are interested, we can whip something up and add it to our official list!

Thanks to Danielle Wayland for the reply*:
So the forum text boxes don't allow raw html code. Any html will be displayed as plain text. You'll need to use BBCode instead. Here's a short tutorial.
The BBCode for the spoiler tag is [ SPOILER ] whatever here [ /SPOILER ] (no spaces).
*Edited reply to read as 'BBCode', otherwise here reproduced in original text.
Where can I get one of those fancy word counters I see in people's signatures?
Tickerfactory.com is a good place. It will generate the html AND BBCode for you, so just select your options, then copy and paste the code straight into your signature. BAM, shiny sig!
Why did a random picture of a kitten suddenly appear at the top of my PPT?
We have a silly Steve tradition carried over from our ancestor, NaNoPlotMo, where whoever writes the first post on the new page of a PPT drops in a picture of something pretty that the thread's creator likes to look at, to greet them when they open their thread. It's just a thing to help spread motivated. The picture can be of anything, provided that the content is PG-13 or under. We just Participation is entirelyMANDATORY optional, of course, and if you'd rather not do it, it's totally fine. :-)
Why is the off-topic section full of such weird stuff?
It's not. We have no idea why you might think anything in the off-topic section is weird.

Can someone help me out with the Signature feature? I pasted some html for a word meter, but the html code shows up raw. I see others with the meters, so I know the box can take html, so I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.

I had trouble with the "spoiler" html code, so it might be a glitch in the system?
