So I'm down for this.
Three important things NaNo has: goals, graphs, and goodies.
Goals: We have those.
Graphs: The easiest way to simulate a NaNo profile is to create a thread where each person has their own post to showcase their novel summary, their graph, their cover, etc. as they wish...or their own thread like for SSSS, doesn't matter. Alternatively, we COULD give each person a custom page, but that would mean we'd have to build them individually per person. This would take longer to set up, but it would be pretty much exactly what NaNo gives us.
Cover - If you have one. Can showcase in the post/thread or link one.
Novel Summary - If you have one.
Excerpt - Ditto.
Theme Music - Totally allowed.
Tracking - There are any number of apps where you can track data externally, like WriteTrack. Internally though, we basically have tickers.
Now, graphs...I found a free app called
amChart where you can easily make a fancy looking live graph, though you do have to create an account. It's really easy to type or paste in the data. It's got easily embeddable html which you can put anywhere, or a url to the page. Only thing is, Proboards doesn't like people putting html in posts, so as long as no one minds having to click a link in the thread instead of seeing a picture, it is totally possible to have a graph pretty much like the NaNo one. As an example, see the link in my mini profile, next to NaNo 2015. Not saying everyone has to have a graph though, or that they have to use this app. If you really want a picture though, you'd have to take a screenshot and slap it into the post every time. To simulate the live update like with the tickers, you'd have to host the image somewhere where you control what it's named, and just save over the old image with the new one with the same name, so the url stays the same.
That said, with custom pages, you CAN embed it...or admins can, but that would only have to be done once. After that, changes would show up automatically.
NaNo Bar - Create tiny tickers and drop them in our signatures. We could do the same with our graph urls too, actually.
Could also host an external profile page, like on a blog, in which case formatting and embedding a live graph would be much easier.
Goodies: How about each person submit something - a custom short story (like 100 words), a banner, a congratulatory message, a song (even on Youtube), a poem, etc. Whoever wins gets all the goodies!
I'm starting to get sleepy...starting to ramble. Feel free to ask questions if something I said doesn't make sense.
Edit: So given that there are only four or five of us doing this NaNo challenge, I'm totally open to both making custom profile pages AND/OR just creating threads. To summarize my rambling, pros and cons:
Custom Pages:
Pros - Embedded live updating graph that's as good as NaNo's. One page to rule them all.
Cons - We'd need to build them individually for each member. In order to add content though, everyone would have to create a post with whatever they wanted, but admins would have to plug it in for everyone. That would only have to be done once though. Once done editing the post will propagate the change to the page.
Threads:
Pros - Easy to create and maintain for everyone.
Cons - Graphs would be linked or would have to be posted as images rather than live.
Both ways can act as profile pages in that you can easily link to them in a signature or mini profile. Thing with a mini profile though is that we can't use hyperlink bbcode so the raw url would show up like it does on mine.
