So time is doing that thing again and I was going to start this thread with about a week of July left, but somehow ended up with only four days to go. Anyway, four days is plenty of time to plan our next month of Steve activities, right?
A couple of ideas:
* I want to do 'part 2' of the Self-Evaluation, where we go through the self-evaluations in detail and come up with a short list of questions for each participant to answer.
* I also think we should move right along to some activities based around the weaknesses mentioned in those self-evaluations. -- Maybe a 'reading' challenge where we pick up a couple of books that seem really strong in our weak areas, then explain to the class what makes them strong -- Collect up some plotting templates/structures and... I don't actually know what to do with them. Just talk about how they work, maybe? I think there's examples of famous novels broken down into some of these structures, so that might be a direction to look -- There needs to be something about editing, but other than my current idea about a 'post-draft outline' I'm pretty clueless here -- Random idea - a 'purple prose' roleplay/game?
Are there any external events going on in August?

Part 2 of the self-evaluation thing is here. Basic overview: read each self-evaluation, post three or more questions for each person.

* I want to do 'part 2' of the Self-Evaluation, where we go through the self-evaluations in detail and come up with a short list of questions for each participant to answer. Just on the subject of this... In the Part 2 challenge, there's no specific deadline for posting the questions. I'm wondering what sort of timeframe everyone would be comfortable with for that, or more particularly what sort of time we want to dedicate to Part 3 - answering our questions. Also, I'm not really sure what Part 4 should be. The overall idea of the challenge is to reach the point where we can set (and reach) our writing goals, with support/accountability coming from our fellow Stevians. At the moment we're groping our way towards figuring out our strengths and weaknesses, and how they're affecting the things we want to do. The original idea comes from this blog post on Fiction University, and is discussed on the first page of the July planning thread. From the blog post: Random thought, because I'm thinking as I type: how about a list of all our 'stuck but not abandoned' projects and the reasons why they fall into that category? I think that either needs to be a whole separate challenge, or else I might add it to everyone's list of questions. It's possibly an easy list for some of you, but for me it would be... Well, I'd get a lot of my data from a thing I call my 'Scary List of Scary', so that probably tells you how I feel about it. Anyway, that whole 'writer homework' and 'coming up with tasks and schedules as a team' is where we're headed. Possible next/future steps: * Some kind of 'testing/recording week(s)' where we compile a list of all the things we normally manage to get done in a period of time. * A 'work breakdown' where we pick a thing or things we really want to get done and try to break it down into bite-sized steps. * Specific task-related challenges aimed at addressing common weaknesses: - finding books that are strong in the areas we're weak and analysing how they do it, then working on a sort of mini plan of attack for developing that particular skill. - Breaking down a novel or one of our own drafts to fit into a particular story structure. - Small writing challenges (flash/snippet) where we try to do one particular thing e.g. quickly describe a place, introduce a character, show a particular type of event...

I just finished writing some questions. I'll post them soon.

Random idea: a weekly flash/snippet challenge where we show our characters in mundane situations - buying fast food, catching public transport, making breakfast, enjoying some quiet 'me time' and other things like that.
For fantasy characters, you'd interpret the prompt to use the local equivalent. Like, if you were in a traditional medieval-style fantasy world you'd probably substitute a visit to the local tavern for buying fast food.
Also, maybe a 'bonus credit' element where you try to write the snippet in a certain style e.g. as descriptively as possible, in train-of-thought/internal monologue, in a certain POV/tense combination you don't usually use, from the POV of a minor character, in a particular place from our story worlds.

Um... so does two likes and no replies mean I should go ahead and set this up, or 'nice idea, but we're not really interested'?

Aw shit, it happened AGAIN. Either I'm losing my mind or Steve is mounting a guerrilla campaign of insanity upon me. I swear I replied to this, but for some reason it's not here.
So, I think this is a great idea and we should totally do it!

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's happening too. I'm gonna start taking screenshots of every post I post just to prove it. Crap. Attachments:

On the subject of missing posts, the only 'Show Your Work' rules I can find are archived in 2014. Possible reasons for this: disappearing posts, forgetful admins, Siana failing at noticing things. Edit: I've added a new SYW rules post, and also put up a flash/snippet challenge thread.
