It was either that or doughnuts, or possibly daikon. Any further suggestions for foods beginning with D? So, December is coming up and it's probably about time we started thinking about not-NaNo activities. Things that are happening: 1. On Absolute Write, there's the SS-SFF-SS challenge running from December to some time in February. You can read about last year's event here: The 2015-2016 Sekrit Solstice Sci-Fi/Fantasy Story Swap. ADOZ and Siana have both participated in this for the past few years and... well, I don't know if you'd actually call it fun, but it's a great experience and writing a story for someone else and then having them read it feels surprisingly good. 1a. A mini-swap on Steve is also a possibility. 2. I think NaNoWriMo starts the 'Now What?' stuff in December? Lots of editing/revision resources and other stuff like that. 3. In the last week of November or the first week of December, I'll be posting a 'How did November go?' survey here on Steve. It probably won't be very interesting, but possibly illuminating. 4. ...? *puts out a tray of various snacks* *adds a drinks machine* Let's chat. What would you like to see on Steve in December?

Danish. If you want to get really general, dessert.
1a sounds like an interesting idea. Only problem I have is that I never know what to ask from people, which makes the whole gift exchange thing feel... kinda empty. Still a cool idea though -- just have to give it some thought.
As for what I'd like in December... I don't really know, so I'll get back to you on that. Right now I just feel really burnt out on November.

Mmmmmm danish. I'm definitely doing Sisyphus on AW. (#1) As for anything else, NaNo is a wash as far as I'm concerned. I'm probably going to go back to Lantern and stop pretending that NaNo was anything but a derailment. I'm going to do more plot building, and slowly get this story into shape. Dec you don't have to be specific Or detailed. In fact, most prompts are super general and open-ended so as to give everyone creative space. They range from super silly (tea cozies and evil sandwiches) to super simple (happy ending). If you're really stumped, feel free to leave it up to your gifter to surprise you. The best part of the challenge is that you're writing a story for someone else and that someone is writing a story just for you! It also doesn't have to be perfect. Submissions range from polished publishing ready pieces to panicked first drafts written the night before. At the least, you come out of it with a story at the end!

Submissions range from polished publishing ready pieces to panicked first drafts written the night before. At the least, you come out of it with a story at the end! That might work, then. I've been thinking about it a little, and I really wouldn't be opposed to a Fantasy/Urban Fantasy story with the timetravel magic being the main plot device. I have a bit of a thing for timetravel, and I always enjoy plotting writing killing myself over a story where the plot is pushed to its limits via timetravel. But anyways, idea. Maybe if December was more project-based, instead of wordcount-based? You know, you come up with a project you think you can get done in a month, plan it out the last week of November, present it in the forums, and just... go do that instead? Daily goals are whatever chunks of tasks you need to do to finish your project, probably planned out ahead of time, and 'winning' is finishing it by the deadline, or somewhere in the general whereabouts.

Not a bad start, that. Although Sisyphus will technically be going on, sign ups won't open for a while (the 1st I think?) and prompts won't go out until Christmas.
Maybe I'll work on editing a story while I'm stuck on Lantern. Or something.
I know discussions of alt-NaNo or not-NaNo have been happening here and there. We don't know what such a challenge would look like yet. Definitely going with the not-words though.
Who here would like to do something not NaNo in December?

I definitely wouldn't mind an alt-not-NaNo challenge, though hopefully we can come up with ideas fast -- I seem to do a lot better when I have time to prepare, which helps me with my haha-I-have-ADHD-and-can't-focus-on-a-project-for-more-than-two-weeks-itis. Also means more time to get pumped up for it, which seems to help, too.

Well, instead of a writing challenge in December we could always have a planning/prep challenge. Or we could have a really small-wordcount challenge, like to write poetry or flash where the actual 'writing' part of it isn't a huge task. Or maybe something a bit silly, like rewriting song lyrics so they're about a WIP.
I guess what we do in December depends if we want to embark on something new, finish off stuff, relax/recharge etc. I don't know about everyone else, but I tend to have a really bad 'post-NaNo slump' in December and get almost nothing done for the first half of the month. It's going to be worse than ever this year, too, because I have two big assignments due this weekend and then right after that my summer classes start.
Not serious suggestion unless everyone suddenly gets enthusiastic about it: how about a challenge to tell a story in pictures found on the internet? We could combine the 'swap' idea with that and have collage/storyboard/scrapbook gifts instead of writing.

I could definitely go for a quieter month that allows for slow and steady work, or small goals. I'm still going to be busy so I won't have a lot of time.
I could go for the silly song lyrics. Throw allowing drawing pictures as well as existing pictures/gifs/ into the not-serious scrapbook challenge, and I could go for that as well. Not sure about the swap bit, I won't have enough time to clean anything up.

December: the month of relaxing, recharging and random silliness (and also continuing to work on the things that we always work on)!
Thoughts?

Yes.
This should be the month where nothing is impossible, silly, serious, or downright ridiculous.

GUYS!!! laloca, Siana Blackwood, monica4567, maawolfe36, @d4rksh1nes, LillianAltair, Danielle Wayland, Dec, Clayres, srhevans1(Yes, I tagged some of the most frequent/recent posters but this is open to EVERYONE...) The Sisyphus sign ups are OPEN!Who: YOU. And YOU. And yes, you over there. Come hither all n00bs and novelists! What: The SSSFFSS challenge, a.k.a. Sisyphus, is a prompt-based short story swap where you write a story for someone and someone else writes a story for you. Once subs are in and gifts go out, we find out who wrote which story...slowly, because based on snips we have to guess who wrote what! Then once everyone is known, requests open up to everyone and we get to request to read whatever catches our fancy! Usually there are so many participants that it's like a whole new anthology every year. I really love reading what everyone dos at the end and how they interpreted their prompts. Yes, it's actually a lot more fun than it sounds. Let's just say, last year's thread updated like lightning. Oh, and it's SECRET, so you won't know who your gifter is and what they wrote for you until the 1st of March! Like NaNo, it's fun and exhilarating, and quality is no big deal. Unlike NaNo, word count doesn't matter; you just aim to complete something instead. It fits in to your plan no matter what you're working on. It's great for motivation too, and in the end you have a complete short story draft. Where: Over on Absolute Write! Go join and sign up now! When: You have until December 21st to sign up and until February 28th to write a story. Plenty of time to get over the post NaNo burnout! Why: Personal note. I've done it three times now, and I love it. It's the best feeling, writing a story just for one person, and knowing someone is putting in time writing a story just for you! While there's NaNo style panic sometimes, it's also low pressure because it's more about participation than worrying about writing a professional draft. The people there are super encouraging too. Story-wise, I love how You can make it exactly as serious or silly as You want. You get everything from depressed gazebos and tea cozies to grimdark horror, squishy cutesy frolics to hard SF. It's all in the spirit of fun, so don't worry if your story is a first draft or full of typos. Subs come in at anywhere from publication ready to typed previous night and full of chaos. Nothing to lose and a draft to gain, right? At the least you get to try something new along with a bunch of others in the same boat as you! Then on March 1st it's like Christmas in spring, as you madly refresh your inbox waiting for your story to arrive. If you haven't already, I highly recommend you click that link above and read the first post by CobraMisfit, who runs the challenge, and check out last year's thread. His gifs explain it all better than I can. Hope to see y'all there!

Sorry for double post, different topic. Um, I'm opening up NaNoFiMo. Just got a question about it in the chat, and *guilt* I just logged on to FiMo and there are interested members... I know, I know, it's terrible, I'm a freaking admin... Edit: FiMo is live! Hope I got everything right...

I'm definitely signing up for the SSSFFSS (hope that's the right number of Ses and Fs lol), that sounds like a really fun time! I had to register for an account over there, still waiting on confirmation email.
What's NaNoFiMo? I guess the Fi means Finish?
