Now that the new year is here, we ought to do something new. We have the motivational thread for cheering, and Resources for sharing whole articles and such, but something is still missing.
Enter this thread, where you can share any useful bits of advice that come along, that might possibly help others.
To start off, I want to share something that clicked while I was watching the first of a lecture series by Brandon Sanderson.
Paraphrased, he was discussing fantasy as literature, and mentioned that that some non-writers see only the trope. It is the job of the writer to ask, why the trope? After all, that's why we come back to the same story over and over.
It's why our favorite stories made us want to be writers.
I think this can be extended to whatever we use that feels right. When we get an idea that fills us with excitement, whether it's new or an extension of something in progress, we should write down not only the concrete things that we love about the idea, not only the what that knits it together with the whole central thing that we're trying to say, the change we're trying to convey, but why does that idea grab us?
And that's what we want to convey to the reader.
