I still have to wait another day for the Dream Theater album because it's not the 29th yet. Can't wait!
In the meantime, I'm listening to the new/old Evoken/Beneath the Frozen Soil EP. New because I haven't heard it before. Old because it's old. Tried to buy it once and it was lost or stolen in the mail. Glad it's available on Spotify now anyway! Funeral doom!

Listening to the new Avantasia album 'Ghostlights', which also came out on the 29th.
I'm embarking on this with a touch of nervousness, because I never really got into 'The Mystery of Time' and I don't love Sacha Paeth's production style (especially after the most recent Kamelot album), but Avantasia things always get a listen on the basis that my list of favourite things about metal includes the item 'anything with Jorn Lande in it'.
-----
About 15 minutes in: I'm going to say it's not as good as the Scarecrow trilogy. Also, I'd really like to figure out how to get better sound out of things in Firefox.
Also, Jorn is still awesome.
-----
After 'Lucifer' and 'Unchain the Light': Can Magnus Karlsson make a duet album with Jorn Lande and Michael Kiske now, please? (Karlsson was the main songwriter for the Kiske/Somerville albums and the first three Allen/Lande).

Triumph of Ruin [Album] by The Howling VoidI became an instant fan of The Howling Void from the minute I heard the first song on his first album, Megaliths of the Abyss. I've amassed them all somehow in Spotify or via Bandcamp, and none disappointed. True enough, neither did this. This release sounds much more mature and confident too. Starting from the funeral doom roots, this release incorporates folk influences, and some black metal atmospheric tremolo picking. These along with vocals serve as texture rather than being in the forefront. It's still funeral doom, and well worth the listen. You'd think he was from Finland almost, rather than Texas! All in all, a great release. Click above for Bandcamp link.

Undercurrents [EP] by ArcheI love it. Funeral Doom! I feel like I say that a lot, but then, only the albums that elicit that kind of reaction (e.g. 5/5 stars) make it up here. Regardless, this is straight outta Finland and great! Click above for Bandcamp link.

Finally remembered that I wanted to listen to this:
Sort of blues/prog metal.
My thoughts: It's okay. Not as good as I was hoping. I like the singer's voice, though, so I might listen again.

Currently listening to the new Amon Amarth album, Jomsviking. I guess living in the future has its advantages It sounds exactly like you'd expect an Amon Amarth album to sound. New lyrics, otherwise same. Okay, maybe the guitars are a bit more prominent. Anyway... *suddenly wonders about using that as a rating system*

Ooooh looks promising! Gonna have to wait until the future here. Well, not anymore, but it's past midnight and I have to be up extra early tomorrow so it must wait. On an entirely different note, I am looking forward to new Moonsorrow on April 1st (apparently it's more folk-y...we'll see...) and new October Tide some time in April. Only if it's x10000000000! Or 10 of those, that could work. Probably more realistic. If I had to use 5 I'd probably rate EVERYTHING a 5 because only 5s make it up here for me with a rare 4. Or we could use whatever damn rating system we want as long as it's intelligible. I feel like I've used : : s before too.
Edit: After having listened to Jomsviking... 5/5 I can't not use that emoticon for Amon Amarth.

So in addition to me wreaking havoc with ZEE WORDSES on Steve, this happened on April 1st. Jumalten Aika [Album] by Moonsorrow Awesome! Unlike Varjoina kuljemme kuolleiden maassa, Jumalten Aika is not depressing. Rather, it harks back to a more folk-y sound like their earlier efforts. It's only the sound though - unlike those earlier efforts, the band has still kept the huge, epic, bombastic sound and epic composition of Vkkm. In short, I highly recommend! Rating: 5/5
So I've had various metal blogs positively hounding me to listen to this. Today Spotify piled on top of the glomp and sneaked it into my recommended list, so I caved. I believe I posted about her EP previously...somewhere or the other. I liked it. So why my hesitation in listening to the new (ish...it's been out a while) album? Maybe because the EP, it was certainly a Leaves' Eyes/Darkthrone sandwich as intended, felt like it was trying way too hard to be that sandwich, like it was just walls of noise and soft singing alternately slapped together. M by Myrkur I actually liked this a whole lot better than the EP. It comes across as more melodic on the whole, but actually succeeds in merging black metal and beauty. Each influence is allowed to show through without actually cramping or subsuming the other - they offset each other quite well. It's better produced, more cohesive, and the songs actually feel like songs. I would listen to this again. Rating:

Today's new thing to listen to:
Sounds a lot like 'A Rose For the Apocalypse', which is no bad thing. Very doomy, very gothic. Heike Langhans is just about perfect in this.
Apparently it was released in October last year, which I completely failed to notice.

Siana Blackwood -------------> Heh. Heh.I've listened to this album regularly since it came out. Good stuff. Evadne (The Shortest Way), Mourning Beloveth (Formless!!!!!), Doom:VS, My Dying Bride, and Paradise Lost are also excellent.

Oops. I must have seen that post, because I can remember listening to Mourning Beloveth. Maybe I got distracted from that and forgot about the Draconian album. Anyway, how about some kitty metal?

Okay, so I'll admit to listening to this because the production team was V. Santura and Jens Bogren. It turns out to be one of those things where I got to the end of the video and immediately found another track to listen to. Then I went looking for their previous album, which is here: Underwatermoon (Bandcamp). It's labelled 'progressive extreme'. To try to give a bit more idea what to expect... melodic symphonic blackened deathdoom? Or possibly deathened blackdoom, which sounds weirder but could be more accurate. It's one of those weirdly compelling things people create when they love black metal but are also enthusiastic and skilled musicians. Also, I suspect V. Santura of being a bad influence on bands he works with. And by 'bad' I probably mean 'insane and awesome'.

I've almost listened to the whole thing and I still like it, so I'm posting it here. The album is 'Ascending in Triumph' by Nox Aurea. It's melodic/gothic deathdoom, and if you like Draconian but don't say no to a bit more darkness and heaviness, you'll probably like this.
